The year of rainchecks, online Netflix party nights, and trying to chat through mobile apps is done. Now that we can hang out indoors again sans the masks, it's time to throw some epic parties—movie parties, that is.
From watching the entire "Harry Potter" series to our favorite horror films, there's a time and a place for all movies out there. But here's the hard part: as much as everyone loves spending the day watching a movie, eating popcorn, and drinking Bev, there's a ridiculous amount of movies available.
Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and even Showtime and YouTube make it easy to host a private watch party of your favorite movies, no auditorium rental or tickets purchase necessary. You can even watch new releases from the comfort of your own home on streamers like HBO Max. Just grab some pizza and tons of yummy snacks, and make your movie selection. The hard part is picking the best party movies that will make you and your crew happy.
To help solve your predicament in choosing a fantastic movie, we compiled a list of movies we love, and therefore, you will also love. See how that works? Next time you've got your plans lined up to watch movies, you can refer to this list of our best recommendations and know that you're about to sit down and watch something good!
She’s The Man
While you might not believe the plot for even a few seconds, "She's the Man" is still incredibly entertaining. Loosely, and we mean loosely, based on Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," Amanda Bynes plays a lovable character who will have you rooting for her from start to end. Watch with "The Great Gatsby" for a literary movie marathon.
The Plot: Viola Johnson, played by none other than Amanda Bynes, finds herself in quite a situation. After the women's soccer team is cut, Viola pretends to be her twin brother, Sebastian, to attend a prestigious boarding school to play soccer. But, of course, complexities and dilemmas endanger her plot, mainly when she falls in love with her attractive roommate, Duke, aka Channing Tatum. Then, to make matters more complicated, Duke likes Olivia, who has a thing for Sebastian! And if that's complicated enough, Viola's twin returns home ahead of schedule, unaware of the situation that has unraveled for his sister.
Bring It On
The ultimate cheer movie, albeit a satirical one. While a series of cheerleading movies commence with "Bring It On," the first one is clearly the best.
The Plot: The movie begins with a championship-winning high school cheerleading squad discovering their former captain wasn't who she said she was. Instead of choreographing their show-stopping herself, the captain was ripping off routines from another school. After discovering this less-than-ideal fact, the team is forced to come together and work harder than ever to make a statement at their upcoming competition.
The Big Lebowski
If you're in the mood for a classic that will never get old, The Big Lebowski is always a good option. Brilliant on multiple levels, it's a parody that's sharp and poignant with its comedy. However, even if you don't understand the depth of the jokes, it's funny on its own. A film that created a cult following upon release, this Coen's brothers film will live on for decades to come. Pair it with classics like Boogie Nights for a fan-favorite double feature—no kids allowed.
The plot: Jeff Lebowski, aka "The Dude," is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, the Big Lebowski, and things don't go well for him. After receiving some less than ideal treatment, the dude searches down the Man for whom the actions were actually intended, the ‘real’ Big Lebowski. When the two meet, the Big Lebowski offers him a job: his wife has been kidnapped and requires a reliable bagman. From there, chaos and all sorts of shenanigans occur.
Neighbors
"Neighbors" is the consequence of what happens when a middle-aged couple (played by the hilarious Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) with a child finds themselves living next door to a fraternity house with a president that has more abs than you can count, played by Zac Efron, of course. A simple premise that can be pretty much summed up in one sentence (i.e., read the first line above), it's somehow incredibly relatable and hilarious. If you want more of the SRCU (Seth Rogen Cinematic Universe), pair "Neighbors" with "This Is The End," a post-apocalyptic horror comedy with Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, and all of Seth Rogen's other actor friends.
Dazed and Confused
A movie that “high”-lights that time of life between 13 and 18, and how incredibly confusing and dramatic it really is. When we look back, most of us are blinded by the nostalgia that hides the pain and confusion we dealt with. Here to remind us is Dazed and Confused, a film that follows a gaggle of teens on the last day of school and the night that begins the rest of their lives.
Plot: A coming-of-age film that follows the mayhem of rowdy teens celebrating their last day of high school. While the incoming freshmen avoid being hazed by seniors, the graduating class has impromptu keg parties.
Superbad
Hilariously raunchy and insanely quotable, Superbad is a view of what high-school boys are obsessed with: booze, sex, and each other.
Another Seth Rogen flick, two ridiculously attached geeks (the always-hilarious Jonah Hill and Michael Cera) try to make their way through the last weeks of high school (and lose their virginity before graduation). Lucky for them, they are invited to a house party. Along with their nerdy friend McLovin, they waste a day trying to score enough alcohol to make the party a party...while also getting the two girls the alcoholic beverages of their choice. Well, as you can imagine, their quest becomes complicated after one finds himself in the company of two incompetent cops.
The Hangover
What some would call one of the best comedies of our generation, "The Hangover" brings together a crew of talented actors (Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms) for a movie that will have you in stitches from the opening credits to the final scene.
Plot: A mere two days before his wedding, the groom and his three friends head to Vegas for the bachelor party to blow off some steam. Unfortunately, they blew off a little too much steam. They get blackout drunk and they are left with zero memories of the night before and have no idea where their groom is. With little time to spare before the wedding, the friends attempt to retrace their steps so they can get the groom to his wedding on time.
John Tucker Must Die
A revenge-comedy chick-flick, John Tucker Must Die is believably unbelievable. The truth is, all girls know a John Tucker in their lives, and all girls want to find a friend group like the one the girls form by the end of the film. Beloved by teenagers of all ages,
Plot: After realizing they are all dating the same guy, three girls from completely different groups of friends come together for revenge, enlisting the help of the new girl in school. All together, they conspire to break the guy's heart while simultaneously destroying his reputation.
